A Brief History of Surfside Beach, SC
In the late 1800s, Surfside Beach was known as “Roach’s
Beach”, a town with one tow story building and many
small cottages. It was hit by a hurricane in 1893, which
caused much damage. In the 1920s, Mr. George J. Holiday purchased
the region. He renamed the town “Floral Beach” for
his wife, Flora, and daughter, Floramay.
The area’s main industries were lumber and feed farming for the
couple dozen horses and mules located throughout the area. During the
late 1920s, the land was purchased and partially developed by a group
from Columbia. In 1952, the town was again renamed, this time to “Surfside
Beach.” The area was described as an undeveloped beach area
with sand dunes.
During 1954, Hurricane Hazel wrestled in and destroyed 18 of the
beach’s
65 houses. The event didn't deter developers and they continued
to build the town. T.J. Harrison opened the first grocery store
for the six permanent families and summer residents in 1956, and
later became mayor.
The growth of Surfside Beach didn't develop until after
1956 when Myrtle Beach Air Force Base was reactivated. By 1964,
the town’s
increasing popularity demanded increased police protection, mosquito
and sanitation control, and streetlights and zoning ordinances.
Public parking and walkways were soon established.
Over the next few years,
the town of Surfside Beach continued to grow and made many improvements.
Streets were improved, water lines were laid and business and residential
buildings were erected. To this day, Surfside Beach is one of the fastest
growing parts of the country.
